Federer: SA's Kevin Anderson could win a Grand Slam
This was Federer's fifth award since the inception of the honours in 2000 and his first since 2008.
Federer, who won a record 20th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year, says that Anderson's loss in the final of last year's US Open would have unlocked the belief that he could finally win a major tournament. Speaking after receiving the awards, an ecstatic Federer said, "This is a very special moment for me".
"Once you get rolling like Novak and I did, all of a sudden you don't look back, then a few years later you do look back and you have eight or 10 Grand Slam titles, it's insane", said Federer, the oldest world No. 1 in ATP history. When I won my first Laureus award in 2005, if you had said that I would win six Larias Awards then I do not trust you. It's been an wonderful ride'.
With his sixth trophy, the 36-year-old added to his impressive collection of silverware in the last 13 months, which included three Grand Slams and the world No 1 sport.
Williams, who also gave birth to her first child in 2017, is now the most decorated female Laureus Award victor with five statuettes. Other finalists in the team of the year category included the French Davis Cup tennis team, the National Basketball Association champion Golden State Warriors, the 2017 Super Bowl-winning New England Patriots and Champions League winners Real Madrid.
