Fire In Russian Shopping Center Kills Five
Russian authorities on Monday denounced what they called "flagrant violations" of safety norms that led to the deaths of 64 people, many of them children, in a fire at a busy shopping mall in an industrial city in Siberia.
A further 27 people are missing and as many as 41 children may be among the victims, Russian officials say. The patient in the most severe condition is a 11-year-old child who jumped out a fourth floor [window] during the fire and got a heavy injury... As she walks out of the building, the ground floor can be seen filling up with smoke.
The Investigative Committee earlier said that three children and a woman had died.
Some accounts indicated that the blaze first erupted in a children's game room and spread quickly, filling the huge building with toxic fumes. "On the days of mourning, the state flags of the Russian Federation and the flags of the region will be lowered on the whole territory of the Kemerovo region", Xinhua news agency quoted an official statement as saying.
Various social media posts said that fire alarms failed to go off as people rushed in panic through thick clouds of smoke, some jumping out of windows. An additional 43 people were injured in the blaze, the report said.

Maryland High School Shooter Shot Himself in the Head, Authorities Say
Mary's County, Maryland, say the gunman in last week's school shooting at Great Mills High School killed himself. Authorities have revealed that the handgun used in the shooting was owned by the gunman's father.
The consulate service department of Ukraine's foreign ministry reported that on Monday morning.
Witnesses say fire alarms in the mall didn't work.
Russia's Investigative Committee, which handles major crimes, said it was trying to bring in the mall's owner for questioning and wanted to detain a security guard who turned off the public address system after learning of the blaze.
"I think they died of suffocation, because I was the last to leave and there were no other people left in the zoo". President Vladimir Putin sent his condolences to the relatives of the victims and all those affected by the fire.
The mall, which was converted from a former confectionery factory in 2013, is said to be in danger of collapse.
