The building, built almost a century ago was the location of the iconic St. Nick's Pub earlier and was closed down permanently in 2011. During attempts to extinguish the fire, conditions unfortunately turned fatal, and the FDNY announced early Friday morning that one of their own, Michael R. Davidson, was lost.

When a basement fire set off five alarms in NY yesterday (March 22nd 2018), multiple firefighters rushed to the scene, and while three were left with serious injuries, the fourth - 37-year-old Michael Davidson - did not survive after being rushed to hospital. Davidson's brother, Eric, serves the city as a firefighter in the Bronx.

"We watched firsthand with astonishment as they charged into the smoke to make sure all were safely out and then fought to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading, putting their lives on the line as they do every day", the statement read.

FDNY officials said in a tweet that the blaze broke out about 11 p.m. Thursday in the basement of the building.

"Our entire city mourns his loss". "The FDNY are real life super-heroes and have our boundless admiration and gratitude".

Norton is directing a period crime drama movie called "Motherless Brooklyn", adapted from a novel by Jonathan Lethem about Lionel Essrog (Norton), a 1950s NY private detective with Tourette's syndrome trying to solve the murder of his friend Frank Minna, played by Bruce Willis.

During his 15 years with the department, Davidson was cited four times for bravery and life-saving actions. You think a movie comes up here and it is good for the neighbourhood. Two other firefighters were injured fighting the massive blaze while over 200 firefighters from across the city were able to put it under control around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, March 23. "Not a fire. damn".
