Firefox extension keeps Facebook from tracking you on the web

Mozilla launches Facebook Container add-on to isolate your web browsing activity from Facebook

Mozilla does not collect data from your use of the Facebook Container extension.

The only downside to the container is that, if you use your Facebook account to create an account or log in with another service, Mozilla says that it may not work properly and you may not be able to log in. The next time you visit Facebook it will open in a new blue-colored browser tab (aka "container tab").

It's worth noting here that if you interact with a Facebook share button from within another Firefox tab, it will load within the Facebook Container, meaning data is still passed to Facebook.

Because you're only logged into Facebook within the container, sites and apps that require you to log in using your account won't work.

Mozilla is really taking advantage of Facebook's latest troubles. However, Mozilla notes that their team wanted to "start with a well-defined problem that we can solve quickly". Now it's also offering its users a way to bypass the social network's controversial data collection practices.

Regardless of what action (if any) ends up being taken against Facebook in light of the Cambridge Analytica debacle, people are waking up to just how much tracking happens on the social network. Neither will embedded Facebook comments or Like buttons on other sites.

"This prevents Facebook from associating information about your activity on websites outside of Facebook to your Facebook identity", the Mozilla team says. First, in a splashy PR move, the company behind the Firefox internet browser pulled its advertising from Facebook.

It is important to know that this extension doesn't prevent Facebook from mishandling the data that it already has, or permitted others to obtain, about you. The "Facebook Container" automatically activates whenever the user opens the facebook.com website. Rather than stop using a service you find valuable, we think you should have tools to limit what data others can obtain. It has launched a new Firefox extension called "Facebook Container" which will essentially isolate Facebook tracking from the rest of your online activity. This extension focuses on limiting Facebook tracking, but other ad networks may try to correlate your Facebook activities with your regular browsing.
