The unannounced smartwatch was teased by Fitbit not long ago during its latest investors call as one with "mass appeal".

On Monday during it's earnings call Fitbit told analysts, reporters, and investors that the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch released previous year was "performance focused", while newer watches from the company would have "mass appeal".

No name for the new smartwatch has been leaked, the "Blaze 2" had been expected for this year, but given its differences from that product it's more likely that it will be an extension of the Ionic series or a new series all together.

If Fitbit does decide to pack the smart software found on the Ionic into a less expensive device, this could be a game changer in the market.

Sources aware of Fitbit's plans told Wareable that the company "wants this to be something that will appeal to a larger, more general smartwatch audience". The new band is a result of a partnership between Fitbit and adidas which the companies had announced a year ago.

Smaller in size to the Ionic, it will be waterproof to a depth of 50m, have the same SpO2 sensor introduced with the Ionic and availible in four colours black, silver, rose gold, and charcoal, with a range of more fashionale straps.

It's also thought that the watch is meant to replace the Blaze in Fitbit's product lineup, and could be called the Blaze 2. We can confirm it won't have Global Positioning System, however. Wareable said it expects the new smartwatch's price to be lower than the Ionic's.

The venturing of Fitbit into the mass-market of smartwatches could make competition tougher for companies such as Garmin, Fossil, Tag Heuer, and Samsung.

San Fransisco-based activity tracker manufacturer Fitbit said earlier this week that it planned on expanding its smartwatch lineup, and possible hints may have leaked today.
