A newly-installed pedestrian bridge has collapsed at Florida International University in the Miami area, crushing vehicles and causing "several fatalities", according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A brand-new pedestrian bridge in Miami collapsed this afternoon (March 15), killing several people and injuring others, authorities say.

The new 950-tonne bridge went up on Saturday and was then lowered into its final position, just west of 109th Avenue later that day. Renderings on the school's website depicted a massive concrete structure with fans, picnic tables, and benches atop the bridge, which spans 174 feet over seven lanes of traffic below.

Scott's office said the governor would visit FIU Thursday to be briefed by police and university officials on the collapse.

Students at FIU are now on their spring break vacation, which runs from March 12 to March 17.

Before Saturday's installation, FIU said the method of overall installation would significantly reduce the risk to workers, walkers, drivers and minimize traffic disruptions for construction.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said President Donald Trump was "aware" of the deadly pedestrian bridge collapse and would "offer whatever support is needed" to local officials. "We are working closely with authorities and first responders on the scene", FIU said in a statement.

FIU spokesperson Maydel Santana-Bravo said the university community was "shocked and saddened about the tragic events".

The National Transportation Safety Board is launching an investigation.

Munilla Construction company (MCM), a family-owned contractor that helped build the bridge, tweeted "thoughts and prayers" for those affected by the tragedy. But an archived version of the website featured a news release touting the project with FIGG Bridge Engineers, "a nationally acclaimed, award-winning firm based out of Tallahassee". MCM Construction and FIGG Bridge Design collaborated on the $14.2 million cable-supported bridge. In our 40-year history, nothing like this has ever happened before.

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, who spoke at a ceremony celebrating the bridge's construction over the weekend, told CBS there were going to be a lot of questions that have to be answered about what happened.
