The extraordinary move by the federal government to order a national recall of several million cars fitted with deadly airbags is long overdue, Australia's peak motoring body says.
Mr Faafoi has asked for the briefing from NZTA to include the number of New Zealand vehicles affected, progress on the voluntary recall, advice on whether other measures are needed, and clarity on how the recall and the safety issues are being monitored.
After tallying the figures from the Australian recall, a total of more than 100 million vehicles will have been called back for Takata airbag inflators, making it the largest automotive recall in history, according to Bloomberg.
It's not clear yet what effects would the decision have on the drivers, but officials warn that the danger is extremely serious, as 23 deaths (one in Australia) and some 230 injuries have already been reported worldwide as a result of defective Takata airbags deploying.
The ACCC says some vehicles will be recalled immediately and others on a rolling basis, with scheduling based on various factors including relative safety risk.
The Motor Industry Association is calling for the Transport Agency to join Australia in ordering a mandatory recall of cars containing unsafe airbags.

The Psychological Horror of Outlast Goes Portable on the Nintendo Switch
The Bundle of Terror edition now available on the Switch eShop also features the prequel DLC, Outlast: Whistleblower . Essentially, the announcement caught Outlast fans by surprise, not unlike numerous game's jumpscares.
The compulsory recall requires suppliers of vehicles with defective Takata airbags to replace all in Australian vehicles by 31 December 2020 (or later in some instances if approved by the ACCC).
A subset of Takata airbags called "alpha" are considered to pose the highest safety risk of all the recalled airbags.
The voluntary recalls sought to replace affected airbags in recalled vehicles. About 89,000 have been replaced and there are still 25,000 to go.
"We need to know that there's significant risk, and then we need to know if the voluntary recall is happening satisfactorily".
The British manufacturer says it is working to finalise a schedule to roll out replacement parts in Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles. "We've still barely got a quarter of the affected vehicles on our roads, with the fixes completed".
"It is then left up to New Zealand distributors to try and identify these vehicles and endeavour to manage a recall, which under New Zealand legislation they are not obliged to undertake". The MIA is not opposing imports of used vehicles, but these vehicles should not be on-sold to consumers with outstanding (open) recalls.
