Miami-Dade officials have consented to allow Ford to run tests of fully autonomous vehicles in Downtown Miami, and in the Miami Beach area. Others look like they're robotic but are piloted by humans - that's because Ford wants to study how users will interact with self-driving delivery vehicles.
"We are headed to Florida to test and prove out our business model", Sherif Marakby, Ford's vice president of autonomous vehicles and electrification, wrote in a Medium post. "What we learn from this customer experience research will be applied to the design of our purpose-built self-driving vehicle that we plan to launch in 2021".
The company will establish a logistics terminal in Miami and begin working with partners such as Domino's and Postmates.
Ford's autonomous test vehicles are rolling into Miami, which will serve as the "first proving ground" for its self-driving business. That's why this collaboration makes so much sense.
"The last 50 feet of delivering goods is a real challenge", Jim Farley, EVP and president of global markets for Ford, told CNBC. "It's a less mature space and it's also kind of natural to us". Ford's share price has fallen 13% this year, while rival GM has eked out a 0.3% gain. Is Domino's pilot is up and running in Miami and the company is now finalizing plans with Postmates to run one for its service next month.
