Former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Wednesday announced that he was leaving the NDA to join hands with the grand alliance with Congress and the RJD. He was later expelled from JD (U), when he floated his new party HAM in 2015, joining the NDA.

The immediate trigger for the decision seems to be the sidelining of Mr Manjhi's wish to field his son as the candidate for the upcoming by-poll elections in Jehanabad constituency.

The Hindustani Awam Morcha Secular (HAMS) leader made the announcement after a 45-minute meeting with RJD chief Lalu Prasad's sons Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav and Lalu confidante Bhola Yadav at his 12 M Strand Road residence. His decision to join the Grand Alliance, thus, is likely to trigger a shift of a substantial section of Musahars, whose population is over two million in the state, towards the RJD-led alliance. "Jeetan Ram Manjhi today announced that he had snapped his ties with NDA and br / would join grand alliance".

A few weeks back senior RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh had claimed that even Manhji is willing to dump the NDA and ally with the RJD. However, JD (U) later reversed its decision and chose to contest the Jehanabad seat.
