Former Chicago Bears tight end Chris Gedney dies at 47

Chris Gedney, the Central New York native who went on to set school records at his hometown Syracuse University as an All-American tight end, died Friday, the university announced.

The cause of Gedney's death was not released.

Gedney played in the National Football League with the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals following a stellar career at Syracuse, where he helped the Orange win four straight bowl games. He became a pregame and postgame host for broadcasts of Arizona home games before moving back to NY and becoming a color analyst for Syracuse football.

Gedney was selected by the Bears in the third round of the 1993 draft out of Syracuse.

"Chris was a wonderful co-worker, a friend to all and deeply loyal to Syracuse University and our community", said SU athletic director John Wildhack in a statement.

Gedney played seven seasons in the National Football League but was hampered by a broken leg, among other injuries. Battling injuries during his time with the Bears, he caught 28 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns.

After leaving the Bears, Gedney played three seasons with the Cardinals, recording 55 receptions for 607 yards and five TDs while playing in 45 games with nine starts.

Gedney was named to Syracuse's all-century team in 2002.

Gedney was promoted to senior associate athletic director for major gifts at the university in 2011 and served as a radio analyst on Syracuse football games. Gedney also worked to raise money for the Syracuse athletic department.
