Safety Michael Thomas will sign a two-deal with the New York Giants soon, according to a source, meaning the Dolphins will lose one of their top special teams players as well as a top backup from scrimmage.

The New York Giants began their week by resuming their defensive makeover.

A team captain in Miami, Thomas, 29, can play both safety positions and is also one of the league's better special teams contributors.

A Houston native, Thomas entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2012 with San Francisco.

Previous year he appeared in 64-percent of the Dolphins' special teams snaps compared to just 14-percent of defensive snaps.

Thomas comes to the Giants as a familiar face to defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo, who was his position coach in Miami.

In five seasons with the Dolphins, Thomas, 28, played 56 games, starting 24.

The Giants are getting a good football player who will excel on special teams and will serve as a viable back-up in the secondary.

Thomas' season was cut short as he missed the Dolphins final three games due to a knee injury.

The Giants were looking for a veteran safety this offseason to add to their defensive backfield, where Landon Collins and Darian Thompson were the starters.
