Former Mets, Expos Star Rusty Staub Dies At 73

The New York Daily News said Staub was initially admitted eight weeks ago with pneumonia, dehydration and an infection.

Rusty Staub, a six-time All-Star who helped the Mets reach the 1973 World Series, died Thursday - opening day for the 2018 Major League Baseball season - at the age of 73.

Rusty Staub won't get a chance to see how his former team performs this season. He hit.279 with 15 homers and 76 RBIs that season. His red hair, which had already gotten him dubbed "Rusty" would combine with his 6'2 stature to earn another affectionate nickname - 'Le Grand Orange'.

Rusty Staub, who played 23 seasons with five Major League Baseball teams as an outfielder and first baseman, passed away at age 73 on Thursday. He would return briefly to Montreal in 1979 but was traded again a year later, this time to the Texas Rangers.

His final at-bat came with the Mets in October 1985. One of the best contact hitters of his time, Staub struck out just 888 times in 9,720 at-bats and drew 1,255 walks.

Staub registered 500 hits as a member of the Mets, Astros, Expos and Tigers - the only player in major league history to accomplish that feat with four different teams. Ty Cobb, Alex Rodriguez and Gary Sheffield are the others. His Rusty Staub Foundation donated more than $100 million to the widows and children of NY policeman and firefigherts killed in the line of duty, including on 9/11.

In 1975, Staub became the first Met ever to amass 100 RBIs in a season (105). Staub even wrote a children's book entitled, "Hello, Mr. Met", in 2006.
