Smith was charged with felony assault last August after allegedly attacking his sister's boyfriend.

The Raiders are releasing cornerback Sean Smith, according to multiple reports, parting with a player who would have been due a significant contract next season and is mired in legal issues.

Attorney Jonathan Dennis said Woods "felt the sentence, obviously, was not as strict as it should have been, but he's pleased he's admitting guilt".

Turning 31 in July, Smith never lived up to the massive four-year, $40 million pact he signed two offseasons ago, a deal that included $20 million guaranteed. But he never played up to that level and the Raiders have made a decision to cut him instead of paying him $8.5 million this year.

Below is Oakland's official news release on Monday's transactions. Smith contributed to a lackluster Oakland secondary, and though he intercepted Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott twice in one game, was largely inconsistent on the year. That was down from a 113.3 rating in his one-plus season under Norton.

Smith played in 14 games last season, starting eight, with two interceptions, four passes defended and 32 total tackles.

Smith first reached the National Football League as a member of the Miami Dolphins and spent the first four years of his career as their starting cornerback. Starter T.J. Carrie is set to hit unrestricted free agency on Wednesday at 1 p.m. PST, and time will tell if the Raiders think he's worth bringing back.

Ellis was originally a fourth-round pick by Oakland in 2014. He also has 47 punt returns for 378 yards and 29 kickoff returns for 701 yards.
