Marine Le Pen officially charged over 2015 Daesh tweets
Marine Le Pen, the leader of France's far-right Front National, has been charged over photographs she tweeted showing gruesome images of purported atrocities by Islamic State. One image showed the decapitated body of Foley, the BBC reports.
French prosecutors opened an investigation in December 2015 into the graphic series of tweets by National Front leader Le Pen, which included a photo of the decapitated body of USA reporter James Foley. If the case eventually reaches trial and she's convicted, Le Pen could face up to three years in prison and 75,000 euros ($90,000) in fines.
Manuel Valls, France's Prime Minister at the time, described the photos as "monstrous", adding that Ms Le Pen had shown "political and moral failing" and her "non-respect for victims". Other pictures showed Islamic State militants burning prisoners alive and running them over with tanks. She later deleted the image of Foley after receiving a request from his family.
Le Pen has not yet publicly commented on Thursday's preliminary charges, which came after a November ruling that lifted her parliamentary immunity.

He quoted in his submissions that CBI has not issued him summons in the last six months, after which an arrest was suddenly made. The BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia tweeted: "The INC has nothing to say on merits when it comes to Karti Chidambaram's arrest".
"Daesh is this!" Le Pen wrote in a caption, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS, in response to a TV journalist drawing a comparison between the extremists and the French far-right. In one high-profile investigation, she and the party were given preliminary charges past year over accusations that they used European Parliament aides for party activity while they were on EU-financed salaries.
Marine Le Pen is facing charges of reporting "violent messages that incite terrorism or pornography or seriously harm human dignity" and that could be viewed by a minor.
After the investigation was announced on Thursday, Ms Le Pen defended her actions, saying she was being charged for condemning IS. But French voters overwhelmingly favored pro-Europe centrist Emmanuel Macron in the May 2017 election, and Le Pen was a distant runner-up.
