- Germany's justice minister says she wants closer oversight of companies such as Facebook, following a meeting with executives about the abuse of users' private data. He said Facebook officials "have been misleading to the committee". Facebook's stock declined last week.

- The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee says he's invited Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify at a hearing next month on data privacy.

Separately, Facebook disputed reports that it had been logging call and text data surreptitiously from its users. Katarina Barley says Facebook representatives assured her Monday that such breaches wouldn't occur again and pledged to inform those users who were affected.

The problem is, "almost nobody reads privacy policies, and if they do, they don't understand them", Friewald said.

The European Union has taken a different approach. Gathering data on friends was permitted at the time, even if they had never installed the app or given explicit consent. They also asked Zuckerberg for an update on how Facebook will allow users to more easily control the privacy of their accounts. It has sparked data security concerns that users haven't necessarily considered until now. Facebook did not immediately respond to questions about what types of regulation it would be open to or whether it would support EU-style regulation for the U.S. "Some are wondering if there's a better way to limit who can access their personal information".

The relationship has not only left Facebook users and others wondering how that personal information was used but also how Cambridge Analytica got their hands on it in the first place.

Facebook says the data is secure and not sold to third parties, but the company's blog post "doesn't address why it would be necessary to retain not just the numbers of contacts from phone calls and SMS messages, but the date, time, and length of those calls for years", writes Sean Gallagher.

Facebook is not the only company that has been tripped up by its handling of user data. Under pressure, it backed down and said it would stop the practice. Uber can't send a driver to a rider's doorstep without obtaining a location, for example.
