Georgia expels one Russian diplomat over United Kingdom spy poisoning

Intensifying Russia's clash with Europe and the United States, the Kremlin on Thursday announced that it would expel 150 Western diplomats and close the American consulate in St. Petersburg.

If further "hostile actions" against Russian diplomatic and consular offices in the U.S. continue, additional steps will be taken against its staff and facilities in Russia, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

It added that the expulsion of "undeclared Russian intelligence officers" by the United States and more than two dozen partner nations and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies earlier this week was an "appropriate" response to the poison attack of an ex Russian intelligence officer and his daughter in Britain.

The U.S. and more than 20 other nations took coordinated action this week to expel more 130 Russian operatives in retaliation for the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain.

Britain says he and his daughter, who was visiting from Russian Federation, were poisoned with a nerve agent developed in Soviet times and that must have come from Russian Federation.

Moscow warned that Huntsman s suggestion - made on Russian RBK television - that the U.S. could also freeze Russian state assets would lead to "further serious deterioration in our relations".

On Tuesday Lavrov told TASS, the Russian news agency, that the US has used "colossal blackmail" to get other countries on board with expelling Russian diplomats. "Rest assured, we will respond", Lavrov said earlier in the week.

Russian Federation has denied involvement in the attack on the Skripals and says it suspects the British secret services are trying to frame Russian Federation.

Britain has blamed Russia for the poisoning, and has been backed up by dozens of Western countries which have ordered Russian diplomats to leave. Lavrov said that Moscow called a meeting Monday of the secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to discuss the case.

His 33-year-old daughter was also in a critical condition though the English hospital where she was being treated said on Thursday that her condition had improved.

Her father remained in a critical but stable condition, the hospital said.

Sergei Skripal, a former Russian military intelligence officer, was imprisoned after he sold secrets to British intelligence. About 250 British counterterrorism officers are working on the investigation, retracing the Skripals' movements to uncover how the poison was delivered.

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said Thursday that Britain's allegation of Russian involvement in the poisoning was a "swindle" and an "international provocation".

Mr Lavrov said at a news conference in Moscow that "we have again demanded to be guaranteed access to Yulia as she is a Russian citizen".
