The United States, Germany and France formally backed Britain's claims of likely Russian links to a military-grade nerve toxin attack against a former spy, calling it the "first offensive use of a nerve agent" in Europe since World War II.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stressed that Moscow was ready to cooperate on the investigation but needed to have access to the case materials, including samples of the substance in question.

"Rex Tillerson was the person that Donald Trump was relying on for Russian Federation policy", said Andrew Weiss, who held national security positions during the Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush administrations and now serves as vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

May announced the measures after Moscow ignored a midnight deadline to explain how a nerve agent developed by the Soviet Union was used against Sergei and Yulia Skripal.

"We do not want a new Cold War".

May vowed to clamp down on Russians suspected of "hostile state activity", freezing assets for those in Britain and detaining those arriving at the border.

Mr Lavrov was also quoted by Tass as saying he hoped the former spy, Sergei Skripal, would recover so he could shed light on events.

"This is the fact that Sergei Skripal is alive and his daughter is alive".

BBC North American editor Jon Sopel said the White House statement was notable in the unqualified support it offers Theresa May.

Britain is also trying to build worldwide consensus for a unified Western response, saying the attack in Salisbury is just the latest example of Russia's disregard for global norms on the rule of law.

Commenting on the issue, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that United Kingdom accusations against Russian Federation in relations to the Skripal poisoning case have all signs of provocation, adding that Moscow was puzzled over the UK's stance on the poisoning of Skripal.
