Getting flu shot halves death risk for heart failure patients

"Influenza, like many infectious diseases, is spread from person-to-person and as people move from place to place", Jeffrey Shaman, the study's senior author and associate professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the Mailman School, said. The flu is a virus, and there is no cure, just treatments for the symptoms.

For the second week in a row, the number of lab-confirmed flu cases dropped. As stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "we are now in the midst of a very active flu season".

But what makes this year's outbreak of the flu so different from previous years, and why is the vaccine less effective this season? "Even with current vaccine effectiveness estimates, vaccination will still prevent influenza illness, including thousands of hospitalizations and deaths", the CDC estimates.

The truth is, it works; side effects are limited to a mildly sore arm, and single dose vials of the vaccine, the most commonly used, do not contain mercury.
