Airport has announced it will remain closed for the rest of the day as the Beast from the East continues to batter the country.

Motorists reported being stuck for up to 13 hours, with some spending the night in their cars, and others abandoning their vehicles on the motorway.

Emergency responders and volunteers, including mountain rescue teams, checked on stranded drivers, with good samaritans also handing out food.

Police were advising people not to travel on Thursday.

Hundreds of schools were closed for a second day on Thursday as the severe weather continues with Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire, Edinburgh, West Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde, Midlothian, Falkirk, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire and Clackmannanshire announcing that all their schools would be shut.

Extreme weather left drivers stranded and more roads impassable overnight - with another day of sub-zero temperatures, icy blasts and "blizzard-like" conditions to come. It does look as if we will see the continuation of some very disruptive weather, unsafe weather with roads becoming blocked and villages becoming blocked off across the central lowlands and 5cm to 10cm easily here and elsewhere.
