American consumers may be able to stroll into a USA auto dealer and leave in a self-driving car as early as next year if General Motors (GM) succeeds with plans to mass produce driverless vehicles, which were announced in a press release.

"We're continuing to make great progress on our plans to commercialize in 2019", stated GM president Dan Ammann. The timing of GM's announcement was not lost on some automotive reporters.

It's going to have to upgrade its Orion Township and Brownstown facilities for the production of the Cruise AV and GM has announced that it's going to invest $100 million for this objective. "Our Orion and Brownstown teams have proven experience in building high-quality self-driving test vehicles and battery packs, so they are well-prepared to produce the Cruise AV".

GM Chief Executive Mary Barra met with Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao on Tuesday and discussed the company's self-driving vehicle efforts, the company said.

Workers at the Brownstown Battery Assembly Plant will be handling roof module production for all Cruise self-driving vehicles. The roof mounted modules contain the vital hardware for self-driving cars, including cameras, LiDAR, and other sensors.

The largest USA automaker also said roof modules for GM's self-driving vehicles will be assembled at its Brownstown Battery Assembly plant.

GM filed a petition with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this year to meet 16 safety requirements mandated by the agency.

It also comes a day after a story in The Information cast doubt on GM's plan to deploy self-driving taxis in major cities by 2019. There are only seven states in which the Cruise AV could deploy immediately after federal approval, including MI. More than 200 test vehicles have already been assembled at Orion. The company says its "fourth-generation" autonomous Bolt will enter production by 2019. The Orion plant will continue to build the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Sonic in addition to the Cruise AV. All of this will be assembled at a dedicated line at the factory. Now it's taking the "next step" toward the self-driving future, GM announced Thursday. "Whether it involves traditional vehicles or advanced technology, our members are highly capable of delivering great products".
