Anandi Gopal, who is featured on Google Doodle, goes on record to be India's first woman surgeon.

Anandi Gopal Joshi was born as Yamuna in Kalyan of the Thane district of Maharashtra. In the doodle, she is seen holding a degree and wearing a stethoscope around her neck.

Anandi Gopal Joshi defied all odds to become India's first female doctor. Keeping with the practice of that time, Yamuna was married to a widower, Gopalrao Joshi, nearly 20 years her senior, at the age of nine.

Her husband encouraged her to study medicine.

At the age of fourteen, Anandi gave birth to a baby boy but sadly he only lived for ten days due to lack of medical care. He inspired her to proceed in medicine. Theodesia would also send her medicines from America while Anandi was suffering from ill health. She earned her medical degree from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania - now known as Drexel University College of Medicine - and returned to India in 1886. But, on February 26, 1887, she passed away due to tuberculosis at the age of 22. She did inspire subsequent generations of girls to fight and follow their dreams.

She also attained a degree of Medicinae Doctor (MD) and was congratulated by Queen Victoria. Many of women of her age could not step beyond household chores. The princely state of Kolhapur appointed her as the physician-in-charge of the female ward of the local Albert Edward Hospital.

It was her husband, who wrote to the Royal Wilder, a well-known American missionary, speaking of Joshi's interest in medicine.

- Fortunately, Joshi was a progressive thinker, and supported education for women, which was not very prevalent at the time.
