Google Starts Rolling Out Mobile-First Search Index
After a year and half of testing and experiment, Google has started migrating websites that follow the best practice for mobile-first indexing.
If you ever encounter a website owner who requests Google doesn't crawl their pages, keep in mind that a Google search is actually a search of its index - not a search of the entire web - so the only way to be discovered would be via an alternative search engine.
There's been some confusion in the past few weeks about the possibility of there being two indexes, with mobile being the primary one, but I haven't been able to find any official word on this happening.
Since the majority of users now access its search engine and other services via a mobile device, according to Google, Zhang explains that the index will primarily use the mobile version of a page's content.
Things won't change a lot on Google Search Desktop, where content from the desktop versions of pages will continue to surface in search results as they did until now. When a site has different versions for desktop and mobile browsers - and in particular when the mobile version is an impoverished version of the desktop site - mobile users can often be led to a page with less or worse content than the search result would have had them believe.
Mobile-friendliness has always been one of the many factors in determining how a site is ranked, but it's not the only factor. Google has said: "We provide the same tools to all websites to ensure the best possible results for our users".
However, Google has begun to prioritize mobile sites in several ways.
But on mobiles, for example, the content of search snippets (the quick answers Google shows in search results) will now be extracted from a site's mobile-friendly page. While the so-called "speed update" isn't as earth-shattering as previous Google changes, you should be aware of ramifications that could begin July 2018, and be ready to take appropriate action if you value your Google ranking. And it will favor the mobile version of the webpage over its own fast-loading AMP pages. Site owners will see significantly increased crawl rate from the Smartphone Googlebot.
Google's crawling, indexing, and ranking systems have till now used the desktop version of a page's content, and while they are moving to mobile, the important thing to remember is that this just changes the way content is gathered and not how it is ranked. Content gathered by mobile-first indexing has no ranking advantage over mobile content that's not yet gathered this way or desktop content.
The company did not specify when the rollout of the mobile-first index would complete. Each page has an area at the bottom where you can click - or tap, in the case of mobile search results - to advance forward and backward through results pages.
