Australian government recalls 4M vehicles equipped with Takata air bags
The Takata airbag has been associated with at least 23 deaths and over 230 serious injuries globally, according to a statement from Michael Sukkar, assistant minister to the treasurer.
Auto owners are urged to check the Product Safety Australia website or their vehicle manufacturer's website to see if the recall applies to them.
Motorists who have a recalled vehicle are being urged to contact their local dealer or manufacturer to book in a time to have the defective airbag replaced for free.
Faulty inflators are the root cause of the very big worldwide Takata airbag recall.
- The decision follows a recommendation from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on the back of an extensive investigation and consultation process.
The compulsory recall requires suppliers of vehicles with defective Takata airbags to replace all defective Takata airbags in Australian vehicles by 31 December 2020 (or later in some instances if approved by the ACCC).
Priority will be given to replacing alpha airbags, which pose an immediate and critical safety risk.
Under the compulsory recall order, the government will be able to name manufacturers who are falling behind from July.
RACQ's Head of Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said the recall was a positive move.

Some cars have already been voluntarily recalled by manufacturers, with Wednesday's action concerning those that have yet to be fixed.
But about 450,000 airbags were replaced with a like-for-like airbag that need to be removed.
Four million vehicles have been affected with defective Takata airbags across Australia, with 2.7 million (including 115,000 with the high risk alpha airbags) recalled voluntarily.
The compulsory recall notice gives all the affected manufacturers to the end of June to provide a schedule of airbag replacements, shown on their websites.
However there have been reports of six German Takata airbags "rupturing" between August 2016 and May 2017 in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Turkey. "It's critical they get replaced".
The only Ford vehicles affected prior to Today's announcement were a small number of US-built Mustangs supplied by low-volume importers.
"They are a minority but it's critical they be taken out, and if anyone has got an Alpha airbag, they stopped driving the auto immediately because there's a chance of poor deployment", he said.
In Australia, a man was killed and a woman was seriously injured in relation to the airbag past year, according to the ACCC.
One of the problems the manufacturers will face is working out how numerous affected cars - some up to 15 years old - are still on our roads, and what ones are either sitting in scrapyards or have already been recycled. In the United States, more than 40 million vehicles were affected, and authorities say the recalls could take until 2023 to complete.
