"This weekend was very tense for us - we had some issues in FP1, FP2, we didn't have a lot of spares, so we didn't do a lot of pit-stop practice, and that could be one of the reasons", Gunter Steiner, Haas team principle, said after the race.

Grosjean moved up to fifth behind Magnussen following Verstappen's spin and was successfully resisting the second Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo heading towards the stops.

Kevin Magnussen endured a disrupted FP2 that included some "little insane problems", but backed up Grosjean's pace with ninth, 0.6s slower than his teammate.

"To have both cars not finishing - having been in such good positions and with so much anticipation - it's just heartbreaking to finish like that". If we can end up in that position it will be unbelievable, but we're fighting big teams - McLaren, Renault, Force India - and they've shown they've got a lot of experience and they've got a lot of resource as well. It's very disappointing. The good thing we can take away from this is that the vehicle is competitive.

Grosjean pitted two laps later, as he also needed to exchange his ultrasofts for a new set of supersofts.

"We had a good auto all weekend", said Grosjean.

"Today I had a great pace".

From those 43 chances, the Frenchman has made seven assists in 22 appearances, while adding another two goals of his own. I've kept working so that these clubs come back during the next transfer window.

"Right now everyone is down and we just need to analyze everything to see if it's just a problem with the guns or a problem with the mechanics". We will analyse everything and understand what happened and come back strongly as we always do.

"We didn't have any problems in winter testing so it's unusual.
"It's a lot of points lost today but if we can repeat that performance we'll forget this very quickly".

Defending Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton looked dominating for most of the season-opening weekend at the Australian Grand Prix. Vettel won the inaugural Grand Prix, but there were many other drivers who were really impressive.

Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen finished third.

Even though the times will be taken with a pinch of salt after just two practice sessions, McLaren's Fernando Alonso and Renault's Carlos Sainz both singled out Haas for their performance.

That's given the Frenchman some encouragement ahead of qualifying on Saturday with the belief that Haas are close to Ferrari and therefore fourth quickest on the grid.

Vettel benefitted from the slowing of action by pitting and when he came out he had the lead. But the pace was good, the vehicle was running.
