Head of Nation's Biggest Teachers' Union Says Arming School Teachers is "Insane"

President Trump's idea to arm teachers in schools is a bad one says former NYPD cop and teacher

President Trump's idea to arm teachers in schools is a bad one says former NYPD cop and teacher

This week, President Donald Trump offered a suggestion to solve our country's mass shooting crisis in our nation's schools: arm teachers.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel has confirmed that the armed officer on duty at the Stoneman Douglas remained outside of the building where the shooter began his rampage, breaking protocol.

After bringing up the notion of arming teachers in a town hall meeting with the survivors of the Parkland shooting last week, President Trump tweeted Saturday that states should allow teachers who are "firearms adept" to get annual training and bonuses so that "shootings will not happen again".

POTUS gave a glimpse of his plan, telling TV cameras, "We need to let people know, "You come into our schools, you're going to be dead and it's going to be fast".

That begs the question: In arming teachers, does Trump accept that teachers will nearly inevitably accidentally kill a few students while trying to shoot a mass shooter, given the NYPD certified fact that even trained police, who are regularly retrained on shooting guns accurately, have such a poor "good shoot" percentage in shootout situations? "Abolish public schools and privatize education".

Walker has worked in the education field for 27 years and has seen firsthand how security in schools changed after the Columbine High School massacre and the September 11th terrorist attacks. Exceptions apply if it is part of a school's curriculum or activities. "If we started arming teachers, they're not trained to face those same stresses", she said.

Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), wrote an open letter to Trump warning his plan to arm teachers and staff members in school nationwide "would make our schools less safe".

Reykdal notes that there are incidents where well-trained police officers can not stop a madman with a gun.

Those are practical considerations that seem to have been lost in this arming-teachers debate, but we'll venture a guess that most teachers have been thinking about it. Simply have them register their handgun with the local school resource officer who in turn forwards the info to his department. This in itself lends to a convincing argument against arming teachers.

For years, the OH based organization Faster Saves Lives has been providing firearms training for teachers free of charge.

"When you add ammunition to that equation, somebody's child could accidentally be shot", Smith says.

Williams says an urban school district like Detroit has its own set of challenges that shouldn't be compounded by teachers carrying guns. Then what? Someone gets shot because we put the gun in the classroom? "We have to minimize the vulnerability of our schools". No teacher I know has the time to receive such initial and on-going firearm training. "Uhhh, wrong Ivanka- it IS a bad idea and it DOESN'T need to be discussed".

That's their job. That is what they are trained to do. "The problem is that very risky people have very easy access to very unsafe weapons". A bill to establish such a procedure in Virginia was defeated by the General Assembly in January.

Giving guns to teachers, what a great idea.

Locally, some agree with him, saying educators are an important line of defense and should have firearms on them.

Law enforcement can only do so much and at some point we have to take some responsibility.

When the police, who routinely re-qualify, have less than a one in five chance of hitting their target, what are the chances that teachers will do better?

"Everyone's exhausted", Smith says. We owe it to our kids to raise the issue of gun violence in our schools above petty political discourse.
