Depression over southeast Arabian sea Kerala's southern coast warned of heavy rains

Last year, cyclone Ockhi has barrelled into the Lakshwadeep islands after drenching the neighboring states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

But the developing depression is not anywhere close in strength or scale, although its progress and track is being closely monitored by authorities in Kerala, which too bore the brunt of Ockhi.

Rain or thundershower are likely in many places from Tuesday till Thursday.

The depression now lay centred over southeast Arabian Sea adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean, about 480 km southeast of Minicoy, 390 km south-southwest of Thiruvananthapuram and 290 km east-northeast of Male (Maldives). Heavy to very heavy rainfall has also been forecast for Lakshadweep in the coming two days.

According to IMD, the depression was likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression during next 48 hrs. The warning would be apply for along and off the rest of Kerala on Thursday.

With the weather system expected to trigger rough seas, fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea off south Tamil Nadu, south Kerala coast, equatorial Indian Ocean and the Comorin-Maldives and Gulf of Mannar areas during the next 48 hours.

The India Meteorological Department has classified it as a "very severe cyclonic storm", a designation for tempests with wind speeds reaching 137 miles an hour.

Wind speeds will gradually increase over this region becoming 55- to 65 km/hr gusting to 75 km/hr today and tomorrow. The sea during this time will be "rough to very rough" around the area as well as in Lakshadweep.

The met department has warned of strong rain and gale along Kerala coast within the next 36 hours as a low depression area was spotted in the south of Kanyakumari and South of Sri Lanka.
