Heroic police officer Arnaud Beltrame honoured in special Sunday service
The officer was killed by a jihadist gunman after he took the place of a hostage during a seige at a supermarket in the southwestern French town of Trebes on Friday.
Mr Beltrame was shot by Lakdim after agreeing to swap places with the last remaining hostage. President Emmanuel Macron announced plans for a national ceremony to formally honor him.
According to French-language radio station RMC, the attacker's girlfriend is a convert to Islam who has been known to security services for at least a year. Mr Lakdim, 25, a petty criminal, was on a watchlist, but authorities had concluded the Moroccan-born French national did not pose a threat.
World leaders paid homage to the slain officer, with British Prime Minister Theresa May tweeting that his "sacrifice and courage will never be forgotten". "We immediately withdraw this person from the party", France Unbowed said in a statement Saturday.
"He gave his life for strangers".
The bishop of Carcassonne and Narbonne celebrated the mass in Trebes' Church of Saint-Etienne to honour the four killed and three wounded in the attacks claimed by the Islamic State group.
Lakdim was armed with a gun, knife and homemade explosive devices, a security source said.
A gun-wielding extremist went on a rampage Friday in a quiet corner of southern France, killing three people as he hijacked a vehicle, opened fire on police and took hostages in a supermarket, where panicked shoppers hid in a meat locker or ran through the aisles.
Police have detained a 17-year-old boy, who was allegedly a friend of Lakdim, in connection with the terror attack.
Officers found notes at Lakdim's home which discuss Islamic State, according to a legal source.

"I know Arnaud: loyal, altruistic, and since he was small, working for other people, committed to the country", she said, adding the practising Catholic would have wanted his act to make people "a bit more tolerant".
