US strike kills high-ranking al-Qaeda member as campaign in Libya broadens beyond ISIS

A high-ranking al-Qaida leader was killed Saturday in an American airstrike against the terrorist organization's North Africa affiliate in the desert of southwest Libya, U.S. Africa Command announced Wednesday.

It was the first time the USA military had attacked AQIM in Libya, an Africa Command spokesman said.

But since December 2016, when Libyan militias took back the city of Sirte, Islamic State has controlled no territory in Libya.

AFRICOM added no civilian casualties were registered in this strike.

Officials said the strike had been coordinated with the United Nations -backed Government of National Accord (GNA) of Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj.

The U.S. designated Abu Dawud as a terrorist two years ago.

Saturday's strike, which Africom disclosed over the weekend after media requests, was the first US military strike in that country against AQIM.

The command said Dawud's support of AQIM enabled the group to "threaten and attack USA and Western interests in the region".

As a senior leader for AQIM, Dawud is responsible for multiple terrorist attacks, including the February 4-5, 2013 attack on the military barracks in Khenchela, Algeria, that injured multiple soldiers and a July 2013 attack on a Tunisian military patrol in the Mount Chaambi area that killed nine soldiers.

A Pentagon spokesman declined to provide an estimate of how many fighters are part of al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb. "He provided critical logistics support, funding and weapons to AQIM, enabling the terrorist group to threaten and attack USA and Western interests in the region".
