Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer warned Monday that it would be an"abject failure and dereliction of duty if all Congress approves in the wake of another mass shooting is a bill that would improve the nation's background check system

Addressing a gathering of United States governors at the White House, Trump said, "You know, I really believe - you don't know until you test it - but I really believe I'd run in there, even if I didn't had a weapon. They're great people, and they want to do something", he said.

President Donald Trump has concluded his meeting with governors on how to address school shootings.

Trump was referring to February 14, when a gunman opened fire at the Florida high school, killing 17 people.

On Valentine's Day, a 19 year-old former student student at the school went on a rampage there and ultimately killed 17 people at the school's campus.

"Our nation is heartbroken".

The US president also said he met with leaders of the National Rifle Association and told them, "fellows, we have to do something". "We had one guard and he did not turn out to be too good".

"We have to have action", Trump declared.

The president, who over the past week has pushed for teachers to be allowed to carry concealed weapons as a deterrent for potential shooters, cited the episode as further cause for schools to do away with gun-free zones.

Trump, a Republican who backed gun rights during and since his 2016 presidential campaign, has been under pressure to show he is responding without alienating Republicans who oppose restrictions on gun rights.

For the third time in a week, President Trump held a listening session at the White House about protecting schoolkids from gun violence. "I want highly trained people that have a natural talent, like hitting a baseball or hitting a golf ball or putting".

He has indicated support for raising the minimum age to purchase semiautomatic rifles, improving the background check system and providing teachers with guns.

Mark Barden - whose son Daniel was killed in the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in CT - said more guns was not the answer. "Obviously, there would have to be an incredibly high standard for who would be able to bear arms in our school".

"I have been heartened to see children across this country using their voices to speak out and try to create change".

"We're going to have to start talking about mental institutions", he said. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders later said Trump was touting his willingness to be a leader.

He added that he'd discussed with NRA chief Wayne LaPierre making it easier for law enforcement to take firearms from the mentally ill.
