Bypoll Congress Retains Mungaoli Assembly Seat In Madhya Pradesh

Congress's Mahendra Singh Yadav beat BJP's Devendra Kumar Jain by 8,083 votes in the other Madhya Pradesh seat of Kolaras.

The bye-elections results of Kolaras and Mungaoli - the two assembly segments of Madhya Pradesh - will be declared today.

Ten rounds of voting in the two assembly constituencies of Madhya Pradesh have been completed and the Congress candidates are on lead. Chouhan said that even when BJP wave was blowing across the state, the BJP had lost both these seats with a big margin.

A district collector was removed ahead of polling after the Congress alleged that there was gross government machinery by the BJP, causing massive discrepancies in electoral rolls.

The by-elections in two assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh is being seen as a semi-final before assembly elections to the state later this year.

The suspense continued throughout the counting, especially in Mungaoli where BJP managed to get more votes than Congress in the opening round itself. In Mungaoli, the Congress party led the BJP by around 100 votes after the second round of counting.

Patnaik said, " I would like to express my deep gratitude to the people of Bijepur Assembly constituency for having showered their blessings on BJD". The BJP, which got just 30% vote share in 2013, secured 45% vote share this time. In 2013, BSP had polled 23,794 votes in Kolaras and 12,081 in Mungaoli but did not contest these by-polls.

While the BJD fielded Rita Sahu, widow of Subal Sahu (Congress) whose death necessitated the bypoll, the BJP put up former BJD MLA Ashok Panigrahi and Mr Pranay Sahu jumped into the fray on the Congress ticket.

"This is a loss for arrogance and misgovernance and a victory for hope", said the Congress president, expecting win to Assembly elections in MP later this year. In comparison, BJP gained 25,448 and 18,775 votes in Kolaras and Mungaoli respectively.
