Parents of young children have reason to be watchful as flu season ends
The strain of the flu that dominated the season - which runs from October 1 to May 19 - was influenza A. The Centers for Disease Control notes that influenza B can be just as deadly as other strains of the virus. The 2017-18 A strain of the virus is the dreaded H3N2, which has historically been resistant to vaccinations because it mutates as it circulates through populations.
Yet parents might want to continue their vigilance with regard to younger children, CDC spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund suggested. Health experts recommend people still get a flu shot if they haven't yet.
Though flu activity is declining, this second wave of influenza B cases is not unexpected, Nordlund said. "You can always get a vaccine and the vaccines will change as the new formula is developed for influenza for this upcoming season, but it doesn't mean you can't get a vaccine because you can get influenza any time".
In Northampton county, there were 2,921 cases of influenza A and 2,075 cases of influenza B.
