Snapchat and Instagram remove Giphy feature due to racial slur GIF
Snapchat and Instagram have removed the GIF option from their platforms after a racist GIF was shared on Giphy's library. Facebook previous year released the Messenger Kids app that includes a Giphy integration for kid-friendly imagery. Now both apps have disabled it.
In separate statements, both Instagram and Snapchat revealed that they had temporarily halted the integration of the GIF library with their respective platforms, while GIPHY looks into it.
Some users took a snapshot of the offensive content and tweeted it, underlining that they found it on Instagram. "We have stopped our integration with Giphy as they investigate the issue".
The racist GIF discovered in the image database highlights the difficulty that social media platforms face in policing the activity of millions of users - especially those that depend on user-generated content - even as tech companies develop increasingly advanced software to detect objectionable imagery.

However, things can slip as Giphy operates like search engine in which one the web's top GIFs get indexed. It is rather a challenge for Instagram and Snapchat to find a solution to this problem on their own or will take the help of outsiders to fix this issue altogether. "We have fixed the bug and have re-moderated all of the GIF stickers in our library".
The statement adds, "After investigation of the incident, this sticker was available due to a bug in our content moderation filters specifically affecting GIF stickers". The GIPHY staff is also further reviewing every GIF sticker by hand and should be finished shortly. The company also said it was sorry for the event and apologised to all who were offended.
