Back in January, a separate report showcased a leaked screenshot of the Instagram app with a video calling icon living on the top row.
Last year, Instagram added a "Stories" feature that let you upload a rolling video containing highlights of your day - which was clearly borrowed from Snapchat.
Analysis of Instagram's code has revealed several files that point to possible upcoming voice and video calling features, reports TechCrunch.
But now that the button icons are in APK, which is publicly available but takes work to decompile and comb through, it's hard for the company to deny the coming launch. With that in mind, the presence of these files in the public versions of Instagram and Direct APKs suggest that the company may already preparing to launch these features soon. Instagram has not announced anything in that regard and did not comment on the findings.

So when is video and audio calling launching for Instagram? Similarly, today when presented with this new evidence, an Instagram spokesperson told me "I'm afraid we can't comment on this one". There's no definite answer for that question. Notably, Snapchat introduced video calling in 2014 and came up with audio and video notes in 2016 to enhance this feature.
Instagram has been waging a feature fierce war with rival Snapchat, and this seems to be the latest blow.
Instagram's competition has contributed to stagnation in the growth of Snapchat Stories sharing, but messaging remains beloved by Snap's younger users. Instagram Stories has 250 million daily active users.
If Instagram implements the voice and video calling features, then we can expect the platform to steal the spotlight from Snapchat with its visually appealing nature.
