Historically, even the most crippling security vulnerabilities can be patched in relatively straightforward fashion. The company is releasing Intel microcode updates that will initially be available for some Skylake devices running the latest Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

The new patch includes Intel's latest microcode release for Spectre Variant 2 CVE-2017-5715 "Branch Target Injection" vulnerability.

That's not true of the "speculative execution side-channel attacks" broadly identified as Meltdown and Spectre.

Previous updates had covered only 64-bit versions of Windows 10.

Microsoft is making some Intel microcode updates available for the Fall Creators Update, but these are only for specific Skylake processors. Microsoft is now planning to list the Intel firmware updates in its Microsoft Update Catalog, which will help IT admins distribute these to systems. It first released updates for some Skylake CPUs, then followed with a second batch for Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, and more Skylake processors, and this week with a third batch for Broadwell and Haswell processors.

The company also announced that it would continue its hard line on compatibility checks for antivirus software.

Although Windows updates will have provided you with a top-layer protection against the Spectre bug, you'll want to make sure you update your BIOS to protect your system properly when it becomes possible, as that will guarantee you're protected against the surprisingly powerful exploit route. Microsoft says that it's been working closely working with anti-virus partners to improve compatibility, specifically by reducing unsupported memory calls into the Windows Kernel. Due to this potential risk, we require that AV software is up to date and compatible. We recommend users check with their AV provider on compatibility of their installed AV software products.
