Committee President Thomas Bach left arrives at Beijing Capital International Airport in Beijing Thursday

President Thomas Bach travelled to Pyongyang on Thursday, the Olympic body said, in a visit that comes after North Korea's participation in the Pyeongchang Winter Games helped ease inter-Korean relations.

The German's trip to the secluded state began this morning and will conclude on Saturday (March 31).

Bach had expressed eagerness to visit Pyongyang after the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics that ended late last month in South Korea, pledging to facilitate the participation of North Korean athletes in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Twenty-two athletes from the country competed after an IOC-led four party meeting in Lausanne on January 20, which also involved South Korea and Pyeongchang 2018.

"This visit is part of the close cooperation and consultations the IOC enjoys with all of the 206 National Olympic Committees".

At the opening ceremony, athletes of the two Koreas marched under a unified flag.

Bach's exact itinerary in Pyongyang remains unclear but his visit comes amid a flurry of worldwide outreach by North Korea.

The German previously said he would visit Pyongyang after revealing that he received a standing invitation from North Korea, which was extended to him during an International Olympic Committee meeting over North Korean participation in PyeongChang 2018 in January.

He kept mum about whether he will meet Kim.

North Korea sent its athletes to the Pyeongchang Olympics. It is now unknown whether Bach will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his visit.

Many people are still unconvinced that the cooling of tensions will be anything more than a momentary thing, however.
