Karti Chidambaram's CBI custody extended by 3 days
Three days ago, the court rejected his petition after CBI contended it was "a guise for an anticipatory bail-plea".
Although Karti got a breather in the money laundering case, special judge Sunil Rana remanded him in CBI custody for three days after the investigative agency claimed it had recovered certain fresh incriminating documents and CD from the Chennai office of Advantage Strategic Pvt Ltd, a company allegedly linked to Karti. Karti was remanded in CBI custody till March 12. As per the court order, he can not be arrested by the ED till 20 March in the case. "He says he is a victim of political vendetta and does not talk", said a senior CBI official privy to the case.
Karti's father P Chidambaram, and his mother Nalini Chidambaram also a senior advocate, were present in the courtroom and were allowed to meet him for 15 minutes after the hearing. Chidambaram, who is an accused in this alleged money laundering case, had also appealed to the apex court seeking its approval to allow him to travel overseas earlier.
He shall also be directed not to leave the country and surrender his passport, it said.
Equity S Ravindra Bhat, who heard the issue in a pressed court from 10.30 AM to 1.15 PM, additionally made it clear that if the exceptional court awards Karti Chidambaram safeguard in the defilement argument the CBI has enrolled against him, the ED won't capture him till the following hearing under the watchful eye of the high court.
