Kurdistan hands over hundreds of IS prisoners to Baghdad
The ban on worldwide flights on the region's global airports of Erbil and Sulaimaniyah forced passengers to apply for an Iraqi visa to transit through Baghdad and Basra global airports to go or leave the Kurdish region.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi on Tuesday lifted a ban on worldwide flights to northern Iraq's Kurdish region.
Iraqi Interior Minister Qassim al-Araji on Wednesday announced that a months-long federal ban on global flights into and out of northern Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)-held region has officially been lifted.
During the same meeting Tuesday, the interior minister added that 500 people suspected of having ties to the Islamic State group were handed over to the central government from the Kurdish region.
The UN special envoy to Iraq, Jan Kubis, said the move was a "significant positive step that is certain to boost the atmosphere of partnership cooperation" between the two sides.
Relations between Baghdad and the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) have remained tense since last September, when the KRG held an illegitimate referendum on regional independence.

On 3 March, Iraq's parliament adopted an $88.5bn budget for 2018, with Kurdish lawmakers boycotting the vote to protest against a cut in the amount allocated to the KRG.
