According to the current Northern Ireland Assembly mandate, pubs can only serve alcohol between the hours of 5pm and 11pm on Good Friday and they'll have to stop serving alcohol at midnight on Thursday and Easter Saturday.

The change in the law underlines the loosening hold of the Catholic Church in Ireland, although it also followed lobbying by industry bodies, who claim it will boost tourism.

Brian Conlon, landlord of Slattery's Bar, in the centre of Dublin, was one of the first to pull a legal pint at 7am.

New legislation will see publicans all over the country legally permitted to serve alcohol on the religious festival for the first time in 90 years.

He said numerous punters were tourists from places such as England, Spain and Germany who arrived in Dublin and needed to wait until lunch to check-in to hotels.

THE long Easter weekend is upon us and many will be looking forwards to having a few drinks in celebration.

"It would have been a lost opportunity if the Good Friday laws were still in place".

He said he was delighted to be enjoying a pint in his local instead.

"Another way of looking at it is £20 million saved for families, although I think the figure of £20 million is an extremely high projection of what would be spent on alcohol on any given day".

The Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2017, which was voted through the Dáil in January, overturned a ban on Good Friday drinking that had existed since 1927.

Some Christian campaigners remain opposed to legislation that won the support of all parties in the Dail.

IRISH pubs will open their doors on Good Friday this year after a decades-old veto was lifted.

On Good Friday in 2010, an exemption from the law was granted in Limerick's stadium, Thomond Park, as 26,000 people gathered to watch rivals Munster and Leinster play rugby.

"The removal of this the ban puts Ireland on par with the rest of our European neighbours", said Mr O'Keeffe.

"Pubs opening on Good Friday is good news, both for publicans and their customers but also for the many tourists who visit Ireland over the Easter weekend, who in the past would find the pubs closed during a major holiday".
