Israeli court delays decision on extradition of alleged child sex-offender

Leifer 'fit for trial' but delays loom

'If the court decides to halt the extradition process - excellent, ' Fried said.

A previous extradition attempt between 2014-2016 failed after Leifer was hospitalised in mental institutions and expert opinions determined she was not fit to stand trial.

Prosecutor Matan Akiva presented Judge Chana Miriam Lomp with a new medical report on Tuesday that he said found she was well enough to a face proceedings. Hopefully the next hearing will be the final one in Israel, and Leifer will be extradited to Australia to finally face justice.

However, the report was never signed by the city's chief psychiatrist, leading Leifer's lawyer to say he did not have enough time to view the report written by two court-appointed doctors who have been observing Leifer since her arrest two weeks ago.

Undercover operations by police produced evidence resulting in the arrest of Leifer earlier this month accusing of her faking her mental condition.

Malka Leifer being brought into court in Israel on February 27.

Australia wants Malka Leifer, 54, extradited for allegedly sexually abusing children while she was a teacher and principal at an ultra-Orthodox Jewish school in Melbourne.

"Yesterday we received the new report".

The judge accepted the request from the defence team, and Leifer will remain behind bars in a psychiatric facility while her defence team looks at the evidence.

Israeli police have said she is feigning mental illness to avoid extradition.

Washington vs. Oregon State - 3/1/18 College Basketball Pick, Odds, and Prediction
No. 5 California was 1-4, No. 6 Arizona State 1-6 and No. 7 USC 1-7 against the top four seeds during the regular season. It seems unlikely that the tournament committee would give OR a No. 1 seed, even with a Pac-12 tournament championship .

"I find it hard to see what's stopping her facing trial".

She fled to Israel in 2008 to avoid criminal proceedings but extradition proceedings only began in 2014.

Ms Leifer will have to appear before a judge again on March 7, where the court will re-examine her continued detention.

Speaking outside court, Fried said he expected the case to be lengthy and it could take years to see its conclusion.

A former student of the principal responded in a statement to Tuesday's proceedings, saying Liefer's alleged victims were "dumbfounded" by the news.

"Dumfounded [sic] by the news, our hearts are heavy with despair", read the statement. "We are silenced once again in the face of yet another stalling tactic to delay justice", she told The Times of Israel in Melbourne.

The student was awarded more than $1 million in civil damages after she sued the school in 2015.

At a second hearing regarding her continued detention, Ms Leifer's lawyer argued that his client was not a flight risk and should be released from custody into home detention.

"There is going to be a long debate that I estimate will take place over a number of years until it will be finally decided", Mr Fried told reporters.
