Israeli shelling on Gaza kills Palestinian farmer

All of this is happening in the shadow of the upcoming inauguration of the new USA embassy in Jerusalem, which is set to happen in May - a development that may well help fuel the protest. "If lives are in jeopardy, there is permission to open fire", Israeli Lieutenant-General Gadi Eizenkot, the military's chief of staff, said on Wednesday.

A Palestinian farmer has reportedly been killed by Israeli shelling in Gaza early on Friday, the enclave's health ministry said, just hours before the launch of mass protests along the border.

Hamas, the militant group which dominates the Gaza Strip, has accused Israel of trying to intimidate Palestinians by killing the farmer and by urging them not to participate in the protests.

The IDF has been conducting training drills all week for thousands of soldiers in preparation for the protest as well as a result of the numerous infiltrations from Gaza into Israel that took place this week. "We will try to use the minimum force that is needed in order to avoid Palestinians wounded and casualties". It said troops opened fire at the "main instigators".

Israel has accused Hamas of seeking to stir up protests to encourage violence.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniya said his movement was involved as "an investment in this peaceful and popular event to support the steadfastness of the Palestinians in their battle to regain their legitimate rights".

By declaring Friday's protest action to be violent before it even occurs, the army's own violent response becomes something of a foregone conclusion.

In Ben Menachem's view, "Hamas is attempting to replicate Hezbollah's attempt and turn this into an event that will last several weeks".

Australia cricket coach Darren Lehmann QUITS IN TEARS after ball-tampering scandal
The fourth and final Test against South Africa from March 30-April 3 will be his last game in charge of the Australian team. The players involved have been handed down very serious sanctions and they know they must face the consequences.

The military said it views with "great severity any breach of Israeli sovereignty or damage to the security fence".

Palestinian Affairs expert Pinchas Inbari told World Israel News, "The concept of "marching on the border" actually came from the radical Islamic Jihad in an effort to embarrass Hamas".

The March of Return protest is different because it involves hundreds of Palestinians, including whole families with women and children, camping along the border for weeks.

Mid-May will also mark the anniversary of the Nakba, or catastrophe, which saw hundreds of thousands flee their homes in the 1948 war surrounding the creation of Israel.

Palestinians claim the city's Israeli-annexed eastern sector as the capital of their future state.

Hamas has said it would ensure that participants do not expose themselves to danger by going too close to approaching Israeli positions too closely.

An Israeli-Egyptian blockade, along with three wars with Israel and a series of sanctions by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, had left Gaza's economy in tatters.
