Italians unveils proposal to host 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Turin

However, one Austrian city, Innsbruck, abandoned its plans to bid after they were rejected in a referendum.

Milan and Turin are combining to bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

A joint Milan-Turin bid for the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games has been formally proposed by the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) today.

CONI officials have made clear, though, that they favour the latter scenario and they believe that the International Olympic Committee do as well because Turin hosted the Games as recently as 2006.

"Today is a very important step forward for the city of Calgary and for our collective efforts as we thoroughly assess the opportunity and impact of hosting an Olympic Games", Chris Overholt, chief executive of the Canadian Olympic Committee said in a statement.

For example, speedskating could be contested at the existing oval in Turin, ski jumping at the facility in Pragelato and sliding at the track in Cesana.

CONI said the letter officially showed its commitment to the dialogue it started with the International Olympic Committee during the last few months over the two cities' bids, reports Efe.

The finale revealed that Joey ( Katie Holmes ) chose Pacey ( Joshua Jackson ) and the two were living together in NY . But series creator Kevin Williamson just revealed where he thinks the characters would be today and, well, it's dark.

CONI's decision eliminates a prospective bid from the Veneto and Dolomites region which would have centred on 1956 Winter Olympics host Cortina d'Ampezzo.

CONI hasn't limited its plans to just those two cities, however, explaining that continued dialogue with the IOC and other stakeholders will leave open the possibility "of expanding potential solutions for the different Olympic competitions to other areas" as a means of providing the "best solution for the needs of the country".

Turin Mayor Chiara Appendino supports the bid despite divisions in her own party, the populist 5-Star Movement.

CONI is still recovering from its dropped Rome bid for the 2024 Summer Games, which ended following staunch opposition from Mayor Virginia Raggi, who also represents the 5-Star Movement.

Calgary in Canada, Erzurum in Turkey, Graz and Schladming in Austria, Sapporo in Japan, Sion in Switzerland and Stockholm in Sweden are other interested cities.

The letter-of-interest has been sent ahead of the IOC's March 31 deadline, ensuring that the Italian project remains eligible when invitations are offered to qualified bids in October.
