A teary Darren Lehmann has quit as coach of Australia's cricket team, with footage of a distraught Steve Smith convincing him the time was right to resign.
"This will allow Cricket Australia to make a full review into the culture of the team, and allow them to implement changes and regain the trust of the Australian public, this is the right thing for Australian cricket".
Lehmann said he had no prior knowledge of the incident and made a decision to resign voluntarily because of the backlash his family had faced.
"The players involved have been handed down very serious sanctions and they must face the consequences, they've made a grave mistake but they are not bad people".
"As many who sit in this room will know, life on the road means a lot of time away from loved ones and, after speaking to my family, it is the right time to step away", Lehmann said.
Lehmann said that the amount of abuse he had received since the ball-tampering scandal came out has taken its toll.
Lehmann‚ who said he felt for David Warner‚ Steven Smith and Bancroft‚ who have been sent home and banned from playing competitive cricket for 12 and nine months‚ wore a look of incredulity and surprise when the ball was being tampered with on the third afternoon of the third test at Newlands.
"I'm ultimately responsible for the culture in the team and I've been thinking about my position for a while. I hope the team rebuilds from this and the Australian public finds it in their hearts to forgive these young men".
The 48-year-old will step down after the final Test in Johannesburg, which starts on Friday, in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal.

Batsman Bancroft spoke of his shame on his arrival in Perth and former vice captain Warner, scheduled to land in Sydney later in the evening, took to social media to apologize for his role in the cheating.
"The hysteria has gone world wide, and everyone that dislikes the way the Australian cricket team has played. has been given the opportunity to lay the boots in", he said.
