One reference was to Akie's visit to the school at the heart of a suspected cronyism scandal, according to the documents seen by Reuters on Monday.

The ministry said a senior ruling party official made this known as pressure mounts on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Ally, Finance Minister Taro Aso, over the case.

Questions over the sale of state-owned land at a huge discount, to a school operator with ties to Abe's wife, Akie, have dogged Abe since the matter became public a year ago.

Fourteen of the original documents were rewritten by the ministry after the scandal came to light early a year ago, Kyodo reported citing an anonymous insider in Abe's Liberal Democratic Party.

His ratings had rebounded from a slump previous year, but doubts have revived with a series of fresh revelations.

The operator had named Akie Abe the honorary principal of the school he was planning to build on the government plot.

Victory in the LDP September leadership vote would put him on track to become Japan's longest-serving premier.

A March 9-11 survey by the Yomiuri newspaper showed support for Abe's cabinet fell to 48 per cent, down six points from a month earlier.

Adding to the pressure, a finance ministry official linked to the scandal was found dead on Friday, although it is not clear if the reported suicide is linked to the affair.

Opposition politicians have alleged that the buyer of the land - a right-wing operator of private schools - was able to clinch the sale at such a favourable price because of his ties to the Abe family.

Amid the unfolding controversy over the dubious state asset transaction, National Tax Agency head Nobuhisa Sagawa, who was formerly in charge of overseeing the state land sale, stepped down on Friday for causing confusion in Diet debate.
