President Donald Trump signed a memo on February 20 ordering the DOJ to work to ban rapid-fire bump stocks.

On Saturday morning, the Department of Justice issued a press release announcing that they had introduced proposed legislation to change the definition of "machine gun" to include guns with bump stocks, gun attachments that turn semiautomatic weapons into automatic ones. It's now up to the Office of Management and Budget to approve the rule, after which it would be published and subject to a public comment period before any final version is passed.

"To that end, the Department of Justice has submitted to the Office of Management and Budget a notice of a proposed regulation to clarify that the National Firearms and Gun Control Act defines "machinegun" to include bump stock type devices".

Under US law, machine guns are officially banned.

The relatively low-priced add-ons became a major gun control issue after the Los Vegas shooter used bump stocks to upgrade his semi-automatic weapons during the October 2017 massacre of 58 concert attendees.

Technically, that means the finger is pulling the trigger for each round fired, keeping the weapon a legal semi-automatic. It does not, however, require approval from Congress, where it may have faced opposition due the pro-gun ownership lobby's power.

Cop Who Stayed Outside During Florida Mass Shooting Heard Shots Inside School
Peterson is seen on video surveillance at 2:23 p.m. on the outside of the building. "At one point he says to keep back 500 feet". Investigators say Peterson then arrived outside the building, where he appeared to remain for the "duration of the incident".

However, the gunman at the Las Vegas mass shooting - which took place last October and left 58 people dead and hundreds more wounded - did use the device during his attack.

Bump stocks were heavily criticised last October after one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history.

The Trump administration made its first move Saturday to ban the deadly bump stock.

The announcement came after Trump ordered the Justice Department to focus on bump stocks following the high school massacre of 17 people in Parkland, Fla. - even though the device was not used in that case.

Bump stocks were not used during the Florida shooting, but calls, led by students, for stricter gun control have been heard nationwide.
