Keep Facebook From Spying On You With Firefox's New Extension

You should know that when you're using these buttons information will be sent to Facebook about the website that you shared from. That's how Facebook is able to fine-tune its advertisements to its users.

Most of us remember that it wasn't always this way.

You can't stop Facebook from tracking everything you do on the social network (unless you delete your account, of course), but there is a way to stop it from tracking where you go once you leave the company's walled garden.

All of these methods chip away at the creeping moss of Facebook surveillance, a term that would have seemed absolutely laughable just a few years ago. The EFF has useful advice on how to keep your data where you want it to be, under more of your control.

To make it easier for people to keep the Facebook experience precisely where one might expect it to be - within the browser tab where it is running, and no where else - Mozilla has released a new extension called the Facebook container extension for its Firefox browser. These outside sites will contain "share" or "like" buttons, and when users engage with these functions, this activity is connected to their Facebook identity.

Equally, running Facebook Container is no replacement for the various other layers of protection you may wish to have in place when surfing online - such as a VPN, ad-blocking software, anti-virus, and Tor. While many were aware that Facebook made money off of their information, the level of invasiveness was not made clear until now.

However, it's important to note that if you give apps the authorization to access your data when browsing Facebook, there's nothing Mozilla's tool can do to address it. And this certainly wouldn't affect how the in-phone Facebook app potentially tracks you or collects data on your activity.

Mozilla does not collect data from customers who use the Facebook Container - it only tracks how often the extension is installed and removed. Because you will be logged into Facebook only in the Container, embedded Facebook comments and Like buttons in tabs outside the Facebook Container will not work. This applies to Facebook only and serves to highlight where you have a Facebook session active. The next time the user opens Facebook, it will load in a blue-colored tab where the user can navigate the site as usual.

Facebook Container restricts Facebook to its own sandboxed browser tab so it can't see all the other stuff you do on the internet.

Most Facebook plugins outside of the Facebook site will no longer work, or work properly.

"Mozilla's new browser extension for Facebook offers an intriguing solution for a seemingly insoluble problem, ' said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT".
