Kenya opposition politician says was dragged, assaulted in forced deportation
Lawyers say that today Kenyan authorities deported an opposition politician whose attempt to enter the country led to him being detained in an airport toilet for more than a day.
A High Court judge declared Kenya's interior minister, national police chief and permanent secretary for immigration in contempt of court for disregarding an order to immediately release Miguna Miguna, said a lawyer for the politician, Nelson Havi.
They said that Mr Miguna did not hold Kenyan citizenship but only Canadian nationality.
He was first deported to Canada on February 6 for presiding over the mock swearing in of NASA leader Raila Odinga as the People's President and chose to fly back on Monday following a court order that allowed him unrestricted entry. Justice George Odunga ordered the officials to show up in court on Thursday morning or be jailed.
In a post on social media, he said the airline that fled him to Dubai, Emirates, "claimed that it was forced to carry me unconscious with no travel documents because the 'state had refused to allow them permission to leave"'. "I reiterate that we must ensure that everyone, no matter how strong or weak, respects, upholds and obeys court orders and operates within the rule of law". The politician then staged a protest and police cordoned off an area in the global terminal at Jomo Kenyatta worldwide Airport, the official said. I want to take a flight only to Nairobi. "You can not chase me from my country of birth because you have guns", Miguna said in the video, which appeared to have been taken with a mobile phone of one of the airline's crew members.

NASA co-principal Moses Wetang'ula has responded to the situation at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where lawyer Miguna Miguna has been denied entry into the country.
Mr Odinga said he and his colleagues were "contemplating" suing both groups for the role they played in last year's election - but that any legal action would take place outside of Kenya. The repeat election had a low turnout as Odinga boycotted it, citing a lack of electoral reforms.
The Opposition lawyer and strategist, was deported to Canada on February 7 after he was incarcerated by the government for five days, hours after he organized and participated in the swearing in ceremony of Odinga as the "peoples president". On March 28, opposition supporters in Kisumu, in the western region, held street protests over Miguna's continued detention, setting bonfires and blocking roads with stones.
It's the latest in the dramatic saga surrounding Miguna Miguna - a former ally of the opposition party who swore in its leader, Raila Odinga, as the "people's president of Kenya" but was swiftly deported a week later.
