North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un used an illegally obtained Brazilian passport to apply for visas to western countries in the 1990s, according to European security services sources quoted by Reuters.

Hong, one of the four North Koreans charged with the murder, was an official with the North Korean embassy in Indonesia from 2016 to 2017, Mr Gooi told the court, citing records obtained from Indonesia's foreign ministry.

Japanese media has previously reportedly Kim Jong-un visited Tokyo using a Brazilian passport in 1991.

When he died in 2011, Kim Jong Il was succeeded by his younger son Kim Jong Un, who is widely thought to have ordered his elder half-brother's assassination to prevent him from challenging his power.

Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, told a friend his life was in danger six months before he was assassinated, a court heard.

There is little concrete information about Kim Jong-un's childhood, and even the exact date of his birth is the subject of debate.

The 10-year passport was issued on February 26, 1996, from the "Embassy of Brazil in Prague". However, these insights into the personality and mentality of the North Korean leader help with our understanding of the leader and his country.

Even with what we know about Kim Jong-un's family background and upbringing, it is still hard to predict Kim's actions and where the future will take North Korea.

The name of Kim Jong-un in his Brazilian passport is Josef Pwag (born February 1, 1983) while his father Kim-Jong il was named Ijong Tchoi with a birth date of April 4, 1940.

His father Kim Jong-il also rarely left the country, apart from two separate visits to China in 2010 and 2011, where he traveled by a private train. Although his true birthdate has been shrouded in secrecy, he would have been 12 to 14 years old when the passport was issued.
