And although only bits and pieces of what Lucas' original storyline for Episodes VII to IX are known, Mark Hamill - who originated the iconic role of farmboy-turned-Jedi knight-turned embittered cynic Luke Skywalker - gave IGN some insight into how Lucas' original plan for Luke diverged from the current films.

"I happen to know that George didn't kill Luke until the end of [episode] nine, after he trained Leia", Hamill said. "Which is another thread that was never played upon [in The Last Jedi]", the actor said.

During an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America, Hamill answered it's "probably fair to say yes" when asked if Luke would be returning from beyond the Force come Episode IX, which heads in front of cameras this summer.

In a new interview with IGN, Star Wars star Mark Hamill revealed he spoke to George Lucas about his intentions for Luke Skywalker after Return of the Jedi, and it was partially similar to Johnson's. It was then that the actor dropped a bombshell: Lucas, at one point, intended have Luke die in Episode IX, just as he did in The Last Jedi.

Luke did train Leia as a Jedi in the Expanded Universe, but this is the first confirmation it would've made it into the movies, along with the news that the ninth instalment would've seen him killed off - something Johnson ultimately (and controversially) chose to do in Episode VIII. "Ryan didn't write what happens in 9 - he was going to hand it off to, originally, Colin Trevorrow and now J.J".

Had things panned out differently, Luke Skywalker would have lived to see Star Wars: Episode IX. Or was it decades before, when Lucas had the grand idea for 12 movies? "Whoever's onboard gets to play with the life-size action figures that we all are".

There are several poignant moments in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but many fans would agree that the one that truly had people weeping was the death of Luke Skywalker.

Lucas' idea seem to take inspiration from the former Expanded Universe (rebranded Legends by Disney) where Luke trained Leia to help continue the Jedi legacy. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy ultimately ditched the majority of Lucas' treatments for the third trilogy in favor of J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan's script for The Force Awakens.
