Report: Keith Raniere, leader of NXIVM sex cult in Upstate NY, arrested by FBI
A NY man accused of creating a secret society of sex slaves for his own pleasure - and even branding them with his initials - waived his right to extradition Tuesday in a Fort Worth federal courtroom following his recent arrest in Mexico.
Members were allegedly told that they would be empowered, but were instead treated as slaves - branded with Raniere's initials on their pelvic areas while being pinned down naked and filmed at initiation ceremonies.
He was ultimately found staying with several women in a luxury gated community in Puerta Vallarta where villas can run $10,000 a week to rent, investigators say.
According to a federal complaint, Raniere, known by his followers as "The Vanguard", coerced women into joining a slave-master club by threatening to reveal ruinous information about the slave or someone close to her. He was to appear in court on Tuesday in Fort Worth on the charges filed by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn. Raniere coerced the women into having sex with him and doing menial chores for "masters", the criminal complaint stated.
Donoghue also sent a letter to Eastern District Judge Steven Gold, asking him to deny Raniere any possibility for bail, ABC News reported.
A victim claimed she was branded with Raniere's initials and blackmailed by the group in a New York Times expose earlier in March.
