More drama as Lehmann quits as Aussie coach

The Australian coach was cleared by Cricket Australia of having no role in the cheat scandal but told a news conference "it's the right time to step away".

A tearful Australia cricket coach, Darren Lehmann today said he would quit the scandal-tainted team after the fourth and final Test of a series in South Africa.

Langer (R) is emerging as the frontrunner to replace Lehmann. They made a mistake.

"After viewing Steve and Cameron's hurting, it's only fair that I make this decision", said Lehmann.

When asked his proudest achievement as head coach, Lehman, who took over from South African Mickey Arthur as Australia's head coach back in 2013, said, "I would say the way we dealt with Philip Hughes's passing".

"I understand the distress this has caused the sport and its fans", the opening batsman wrote. It's been my life and I hope it can be again.

"I'm sorry and I'm absolutely devastated". Smith's predecessor in the job, Michael Clarke, summed up a nation's mood with a one-word tweet: 'Devastating'. "What the public wants to see is change".

"Watching those two young men (Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft break down in tears).it's been unbelievable".

'The coach's loyalty gene kicked in. Its a stain on the game we all love and I have loved since I was a boy.

"I don't think I've slept since Saturday to be perfectly honest, couple hours here and there". I panicked, and I'm sorry. "I feel like I've let everyone down in Australia", he said. That's a big embarrassment for me'.

A wave of sympathy for Smith gathered pace after his heart-wrenching apology and as opposition grew to the severity of bans handed out in the ball-tampering scandal. "Australian cricket has been in an ivory tower for too long", he said.

"Cricket is the greatest game in the world".

"This is the right thing to do". Cereal company Sanitarium said it was ending its relationship with Smith.

The rumpus, however, is not over.

"Speaking to the players and saying goodbye, telling them the news". The financial cost for the players is also growing with sporting goods company ASICS ending its relationship with Warner and Bancroft.

"What's happened over the last few days has only strengthened my resolve", Sutherland said.

Steve Smith literally broke down several times while fronting the media on Thursday and regretted his actions during the third Test in Cape Town last week. There is no doubt in my mind, he will learn from this and he will return stronger.

However, Delhi Daredevils captain Gambhir felt that Smith and Warner being the primary voices during the senior team's pay hike dispute with the establishment might have played a role in their ouster.

'We are now undertaking the process to recruit a replacement overseas player that best fits our needs and will share an update in due course'.
